R. Steve Edmonson, director of the Office of Information Technology and state chief information officer, recently issued Ohio IT Policy ITP-F.3, "Web Site Accessibility,” effective on August 20, 2007. The policy requires state agencies or contractors working on an agency’s behalf to adopt the following:

  • A basic set of accessibility standards required by Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and detailed in Section 1194.22 of the Code of Federal Regulations, “Web-based intranet and internet information and applications,” as necessary to the creation of accessible content for the sensory disabled;
  • An accessibility statement on or linked to the state agency home page that includes a statement of compliance if compliance has been attained as well as the steps taken to ensure continued compliance; and
  • A mechanism for accepting feedback on Web site accessibility issues.

The policy was developed in collaboration with an 18-agency working group and was subject to a neutral, third-party independent review. It is available online at http://www.oit.ohio.gov/IGD/policy/pdfs_policy/ITP-F.3.pdf.
